As the relationship between Elena and Stefan evolves, the other character’s reactions and perspectives are spotlighted, each demonstrating different ways on how they exemplify or resist gender stereotypes.
Elena and Bonnie at the beginning of the show talk about Elena’s relationship status once again. Elena states, “things are getting back to normal again, and Stefan is a big part of that”. This is an example of the gender stereotype that woman’s emotions are manipulated by the circumstance of their romantic relationship with men. Elena’s happiness is revolving around her new relationship with Stefan rather than anything else in her life.
In the show, the girls are seen practicing and cheerleading and the boys are playing football – showing a stereotype on what sports/activities boys and girls should play.
Matt Donovan (Elena’s ex) is once again moping over Elena. Tyler, Matt’s friend and football teammate, tells Matt to injure Stefan while he plays football as a form of aggression for his jealousy. This shows the gender stereotypes that men have to release their anger towards one another in a physical way rather than communicating. However, at the end of the show, Matt changes his mind and makes amends with Stefan – showing a sense of maturity.
Tyler is an example of a very stereotypical masculine character on the show. He is constantly objectifying his girlfriend Vicki, and even says to Jeremy (Elena’s younger brother) “don’t worry, you can have her when I’m done”. This shows the gender stereotype that masculine men tend to view women as sexual objects. Additionally, he takes out his anger towards Jeremy in a physical fight – once again showing physical aggression as a form of masculinity.
