This is an advertisement from Asos.com, this was one of the first few tops that showed up when I typed in “women’s tops”. As seen in the description, the top is described as “hourglass” and “sexy” which emphasizes the point of sex role theory. A woman is “sexy” if she has an “hourglass” figure, because for centuries that has always been seen as sexy and feminine. The sex role theory is presented here because as defined in the powerpoint, it shows how “a person identifies with stereotypically feminine and masculine characteristics”. Also, as you could see, she is lifting up her shirt, showing her stomach which is seductive in a way, her looks are selling the shirt because of how good she looks in the shirt. Even when the shirt is not the main focus, her look into the camera and positioning is selling it. Another aspect of the sex role theory is looking gentle, she is slightly lifting up her shirt not “ripping” it off. Also, she looks yielding due to her face expression she looks like someone nice to talk to. Also, her eye make up is not harsh, it’s soft and feminine.
