Season 2 Episode 10
Summary:
Abbi and Ilana go to a BYOB restaurant for Ilana’s birthday. As they go inside, they sit next to an annoying couple that they have known for years. They leave the restaurant, put their name in at another place, and go look for wigs
Masculine Traits:
- Self-sufficient: A man hits on Ilana and Abbi while they are walking to dinner, and both of the girls flick him off.
- Uses harsh language: The man who asked for money from the group of people steals Abbi’s purse, and she violently curses him out as they are running
- Athletic: Abbi and Ilana jump over taxi’s, through stores, and down the streets of New York City as they trail close behind the thief.
- Assertive: They follow the thief until he enters a house, where they talk to his mother about what he did. They ask for the purse back and leave feeling complete.
Femimine Traits:
- Compassionate: After giving a dollar to a homeless woman, a group of people ask the girls for money, and they confront the girls. They say that they can’t give everyone a dollar, but they will bring them food from the restaurant.
- Sympathetic: To escape the annoying couple at dinner, Abbi spills wine on herself to use as an excuse. She doesn’t want to tell the couple she doesn’t like them, so this gives them a way to get out.
- Warm: As everyone does on their birthday, Ilana gets a year older. She starts thinking about death and her funeral and what she wants to be there. She and Abbi explain that they want it to be a beautiful celebration of life and to be a very happy event.
Sex Role Perspective:
In the final episode of season 2, Ilana and Abbi use more blunt expressions and words to other male characters. They demonstrate several feminine traits however; a theme of empowerment is present. No matter what Ilana and Abbi do, they are still in control and can stick up for themselves. There is no excuse to be treated as an object in society, especially as a woman. Episode 10 helped represent what it means to be a woman.
