Episode Five passes the Bechdel Test.

  • In the opening scene, Xo is getting ready to go out.  She is dressed in party attire, and Jane does not approve.  She reminds her mom not to stay out too late, not have too much to drink, and that she has an interview in the morning.  Through this flashback scene, we are able to see Jane is filling the parent role even as a young child.
  • Criteria:
    1. Two women who have names: Xo and Jane
    2. Talk to each other: Xo and Jane are talking to each other
    3. About something besides a man: They are talking about Xo going out and the boundaries Jane is reminding her of.

      • Jane has to remind her about her interview, not staying out to late, etc.

      • Feels sympathy for Jane when she comes home from Michael’s after finding out he was lying to her about Petra’s affair

      • Leaves home because her mother lied to her about her fathers identify
      • Confronts Michelle about him knowing Petra was having an affair
    • Self – reliant
      • She doesn’t need a father in her life because she has made it this far without him
  • Rafael (Father of Jane’s Baby)
    • Makes decisions easily
      • Going to give Petra 10,000 dollars to move out because she slept with his best friend
      • Hands Petra divorce papers the day after they almost had sex

      • Tells Jane Petra cheated on him even though she might not give him the baby because of the truth
  • Petra (Rafael’s Wife)
    • Manipulative
      • Uses baby hat from their miscarriage to reel Rafael back in
  • Jane’s Father

      • Tells the people on the set how things need to be
    • Eager to soothe hurt feelings
      • Shows up at Jane’s work to apologize

      • Kept the secret of Petra’s affair away from Jane

In this episode we see Function Ranking.  Michael has a higher level job than Jane.  He is a detective while Jane is a teacher.  In this episode, we also saw Feminine Touch when Jane rubs the back of Michaels neck to comfort him.
