My 10th portfolio post takes a look at a new ralph Lauren cologne commercial.

  • relative size — present. At 40 seconds we see a scene where the male lead is explaining something to the crew. He is clearly the main focus of the shot and in the background we can see the female lead being attentive. At 1:04 there is a sunset scene where again the female lead is smaller on screen and behind the male lead.
  • feminine touch — present, at the same time (1:04) the female lead gently moves the hair out of her face which i felt could be an example of feminine touch.
  • function ranking — absent
  • the family — absent
  • ritualization of subordination — absent
  • licensed withdrawal — absent

This commercial felt very different because the entire thing takes place on a sailboat with a crew of people (though we barely see anyone other than the male and female leads). Previously, cologne commercials have shifted environments and social settings rather quickly but this commercial did nothing of the sort. This made the commercial much less strange and confusing in my opinion.
