In this episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. Burke lets Christina Yang do a complicated heart procedure on her own. She is also assigned to be the intern of George’s dad’s case. After she does the procedure, she vehemently denies it to George, because she does not want him to know that Burke had her do it because his hand is injured. She is assertive and forceful in telling George not to question her or Burke about it and to let it go. These are masculine characteristics. She later displays feminine characteristics by showing compassion and tenderness to George and his dad when his dad is diagnosed with cancer.
In class, we recently talked about how media can affect what people expect of men and women. If people watch this episode, they will think that women can have both masculine and feminine traits, rather than expecting them to always act feminine.
