Following Stereotypes

When Kevin and Veronica are meeting with their daughters’ school priest he is telling them a story about how he was in the Navy and he met a woman overseas. He later says that when you have been away from a woman that long, that one woman can take away all your worries. Again this is showing the objectification of women for men’s personal needs.

Ian has to go to prison so he finds someone that has been in that same prison to show him what it looks like and what areas to avoid. The person who is showing him this is a very buff African American man. The stereotype that buff African American men are criminals and have been to prison in the past is what this scene is supporting.

Lip is supposed to be a sober companion for a woman. In order to try and let him get her to drink she shows him her boobs to try and bribe him. This stereotype shows that women can use their bodies to get what they want. This tactic did not work on Lip, but it was still a try.

Fiona comes home drunk one night and her boyfriend is not at home so she tracks his phone and goes to figure out where he went. This stereotype is that women are controlling and obsessive over their significant other and will go to extremes to figure out where they are.

Not Following Stereotypes

At the beginning of the show, Kelly and Carl are practicing fighting to get ready for base camp, but Kelly is showing Carl how to fight. Usually, men are the ones that know how to defend themselves against other men, in this case, the woman is showing the man how to defend himself.

Frank and Liam are waiting for someone to get out of a mental hospital and Liam asks Frank why he is waiting for a random stranger to get out of a mental hospital and Frank says that he likes to feel like a caretaker and that it makes him feel needed. Usually, women are the caretakers that wait for people to get out of hospitals to make sure they are alright.

Fiona owns a diner and one of the cooks comes into her office to ask her a question and he addresses her as boss. Men are the boss in a stereotypical situation, and if they are not the boss, they would usually not address a female boss as boss.

Bechdel Test

There were no scenes where two women were talking to each other.
