The FOX television series New Girl, specifically season 6, episode 1 titled House Hunt

Gender representation:

  • This episode is about Schmidt and Cece trying to buy a home since they do not want to be married living in a loft with so many other people if they are going to start a family. As they do this, Winston is on a video chat with his girlfriend and she explains some of the training she is participating in for the FBI. This is a representation of women in the law enforcement field that is growing since there were more females employed by the FBI than males.
  • Jess is woodworking in addition to working out physically since she is stressed about Nick being gone to New Orleans. Winston is talking about Jess picking up multiple hobbies and there is a flashback to Jess moving a fridge implying she has become very strong since working out. This is a counterstereotype of women.
  • Jess is very supportive of Schmidt and Cece with buying their house and then follows them to help determine which one to pick. When they finally purchase one, she starts to say what can be done to make it better with the remodeling process. This shows that Jess is supportive and has empathy for her friends. This is a stereotypical trait for women.

The Bechdel Test: Does not pass

  1. There are women that are named
  2. They do talk to each other
  3. They do not talk about anything other than a man
