Throughout the song “Buy Dirt” by Jordan Davis there are a few basic stereotypes of how someone’s life, specifically a male, is supposed to be like. The song is supposed to portray a conversation that the artist is having with an older man that is giving him advice. Many of the lyrics below are what the older man told the younger male what he stereotypically thinks he should do with his life.

Masculine Stereotypes

  • Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground”
    • One of the biggest stereotypes many people know is that in which the male is supposed to propose to his girlfriend. It is very rare that you see girls proposing which is why this lyric definitely fits the basic stereotype.
  • “Do what you love but call it work”
    • For a very long time, it has been a known stereotype that males/ the man of the house are supposed to have a job and provide for the family.

If you look/ listen closely to the lyrics of this song, it in whole, is a stereotype of how anyone is “expected” to live out their life. The advice the older gentleman gives is to find someone you love, get married, find a home, and have kids. This idea of a “simple life” is a stereotype that both males and females are often faced within their life, and more often than not end up reinforcing the stereotype.
