This song sung by both Ryan Hurd and Maren Morris tells a story of a guy and girl who were once in a relationship, are now separated, but keep going back to each other because they can’t stay apart. Since there are both male and female singers, listeners are able to hear two different “sides” of the story. This duet also allows us to pick out both feminine and masculine stereotypes in the song.

Feminine Stereotypes

  • “But somethin’ ’bout you makes me think we could”
    • This lyric displays the hopefulness that the female has for the relationship. This type of emotion can be considered a “soft” emotion that is mostly seen in females.
  • “ You come back to the love you were running from”
    • Girls are often seen as being indecisive. This lyric demonstrates the way after leaving, the female went right back to the person/life she left.

Masculine Stereotypes

  • “ Girl, with you the answer’s always yes”
    • This lyric can be a “not so masculine” stereotype that a lot of men can face. In relationships, sometimes the guy can be very willing to do anything for the girl if he really cares for her, making this a stereotype.
  • “Guess I love chasing after you”
    • When it comes to relationships, the male can often be seen as “chasing” after a girl. Whether it is trying to get her attention or for her to notice him a lot of times it’s the guy trying to get a girl. This definitely can be done by both males and females but is more common with men.

Within the song, a lot of the stereotypes seem to compliment each other. This meaning, that the stereotypes listed can be seen both in females and males when looking at other relationships. This song has a great storyline about both parties in a relationship being torn about their feelings that are not often portrayed in country music.
