The song “Doin’ This” by Luke Combs is a great song that sends a deep message to listeners. Throughout the song, the artist answers specific questions as to what he would be doing if he wasn’t a country music artist. The response within the lyrics can fit some masculine stereotypes but no mention of a female means to feminine stereotypes.

Masculine Stereotypes

  • “Cup of brown liquor, couple buddies in a band”
    • A generic country boy stereotype usually goes hand in hand with drinking whiskey and hanging out with some friends while singing or playing the guitar. These lyrics fit that stereotype.
  • “I’d be drivin’ my first car, an old worn-out Dodge, Tryin’ to make rent with a dead-end job”
    • Another basic country song stereotype is that male artists talk about driving an old truck, which this lyric reinforces. Most country songs, just like this one, often talk about how they make a living and are “blue-collared boys” which can be seen in this song as well.

Throughout these song lyrics essentially telling where artist Luke Combs came from, there are definitely some examples of stereotypes. From driving a hand-me-down truck, drinking whiskey, and hanging out with buddies this song can be seen as a stereotypical country song.
