This song by Carly Pearce tells the story of a woman finding out she’s been seeing a man that turned out to be in a relationship with someone else already. Commonly in music, there are songs that talk about men and/or women cheating on their significant other. “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” takes a unique approach to situations like this and shows the perspective of the person that they were cheating with instead of who they cheated on.

Masculine Stereotypes
- “He helped me change a tire”
- A strange verse in the song but a common stereotype that a man would know how to change a tire and even be willing to help someone else with it.
- “He never had a ring on, So I never thought to ask”
- Both a male and female stereotype is that if you are married you should wear a ring on your left hand. If people see a ring on someone’s left hand they most likely assume that a person is married right away without having to ask.
Feminine Stereotypes
- “And I’ll spend half an hour going through his phone”
- It could be a common stereotype that girlfriends/ females are considered to be “nosy” at times. In relationships, it could be just asking lots of questions, or like this verse, actually going through their partner’s phone without them knowing.
Coming straight from the title, another broad stereotype could be from the words “that girl”. After listening to the song, you could probably picture or think of what the artist means by “that girl” even though she never actually said or described a person. This ability to think of that person who can get in the middle of relationships comes from actual experiences or stereotypes that have grown within society.
