The media I will be analyzing is the movie Someone Great. In this post I will be outlining the stereotypical gender roles given to us by the sex role perspective portrayed in the film by each of the female leads: Jenny, Blair and Erin, as well as the male lead, Nate.
Jenny:
- very affectionate towards Nate when they are together, very touchy, as well as calls him pet names
- Very loyal. Jenny dates Nate for almost 10 years, and even after they break up she does not want to be with anyone else.
- Jenny is very emotional. The whole film takes place immediately after her breakup with Nate, and most of it she is crying.
Blair:
- Blair is very feminine
- Does not use harsh language
- Soft spoken
- Compassionate and eager to sooth Jenny’s hurt feelings
- Level headed, is usually trying to talk Jenny and Erin out of bad choices
- Not susceptible to flattery, she is very “hard to get”
- Very cheerful
Erin:
- Yielding and shy
- Very loyal to her friends
- Unlike the other female characters, Erin is lesbian, and has more masculine traits such as
- Not emotional: she hides her feelings for her girlfriend
- Is non commital: she refuses to call her girlfriend “her girlfriend”
Nate:
- Very assertive, especially with Jenny
- Very masculine in the way he dresses and talks
- Strong personality
- Makes decisions easily, very easily broke up with Jenny
