Within the lyrics of the song, Its Cause I am by Callista Clark, there are many feminine and masculine stereotypes and counter stereotypes found within it. These stereotypes reinforce society’s standards for men and women. In the sense of how women and men are supposed to act in accordance with their gender.
Feminine Stereotypes/ CounterStereotypes:
Thinking that I think too much and I talk too fast
- Stereotypically women talk a lot, to others in general and in a sense of being more social than men.
Might be born in the same year / But boy, we ain’t the same age / Might be reading the same book / But we ain’t on the same page
- Also, women tend to be more mature than men/ they mature quicker than men do. As well as not being on the same page regarding wants and needs. It is very common to have differences and be at different points in one’s life. Typically women know what they want earlier on.
I can’t help that I’m one of a kind / I’m more than meets the eye / If I ain’t what you like / Well that’s alright
- This lyric insinuates that men are looking at women’s bodies first and are judging them based on how they look. Continuously, women always need to look their best because society will judge them otherwise.
And if you can’t find the rhythm / It’s ’cause I make my own beat / If you’re calling it stubborn / I’m calling it sure
- This is a stereotype because women get called stubborn or assertive when in reality they are acting the same way as men, but they get called out on their actions. In this case, she is sure of what she wants but is seen as stubborn, because she has standards and goals.
Masculine Stereotypes/ Counterstereotypes:
You want a one-dimensional woman / It’s okay, I understand
- Typically men look for a woman who is beautiful and someone who will cook and clean for them. As well as not having thoughts of their own, because in older days they were only supposed to look pretty and not be “deep,” in the sense of thinking for themselves.
It’s ’cause you’re too sweet
- This is a counter stereotype because typically men are more assertive and not emotional. And in this case, he is too sweet and kind which is the opposite of what society expects of men.
The Sex-Role Theory is seen within these lyrics by society’s standards of how men and women are supposed to think and act.
