Throughout the song, Half of my Hometown by Kelsea Ballerini, discusses the stereotypical actions between the different genders.
Through the lyrics:
Half of my high school fell in love / With the girl next door / In their daddy’s Ford
- These lyrics showcase what it means to be male, signifying that men always fall in love with “the girl next door” and they may use their father’s money or car, not their own. This also insinuates that the girl next door is prettier and better than you, or even smarter, and men have to fall in love with the stereotypical girl next door even though that is not true.
Whereas the lyrics:
Half of our prom queens cut their hair / Half of them think that it ain’t fair / The quarterback moved away and never came back
- Showcase what it means to be a female after high school, they are ready for a change and do so by cutting their hair or changing some part of themselves. They also insinuate the idea that they are supposed to marry the quarterback of the high school team especially if they are the prom queen. Because in society they are typically ‘supposed’ to be together.
These Stereotypes are seen in our everyday lives, movies, tv shows, music videos etc. They hold Men and Women to certain standards of how they are supposed to act and do when even though they are untrue.
