Within the lyrics of the song, Women You Got by Maddie and Tae, there are multiple stereotypes and counterstereotypes that society says are the norms men and women must follow. These lyrics follow the Se-role Theory because of the stereotypes/counterstereotypes Maddie and Tae sing about. They have a preconceived idea of what society expects of us.

Masculine Stereotypes/ Counterstereotypes:

Baby, you put a ring on a wild thing

  • This line states that men are supposed to put the ring on the girl’s hand, and is supposed to propose. It also shows that the man is stereotypically supposed to put a ring on a girl, or asking them to marry her when he wants to be with her. And it is his job to “state” that she is yours.

Feminine Stereotypes/ Counterstereotypes:

I talk smack / I make messes / I win bread / I’m kinda selfish

  • These lyrics show are counterstereotypes to how women are supposed to act, because they are not supposed to make money, or make a mess. They are supposed to be the lady of the house, and cook and clean.
  • On the other hand, she also follows the notion that women gossip a lot and can be rude or selfish when it comes to certain things. And even potentially stuck in their ways.

Don’t trust / Me in the kitchen

  • This is a counterstereotype because women are supposed to be good at cooking and cleaning, in this case, she is not.

And that’s the kind of woman you got / I’m a constant roller coaster of emotions / And by the time you think you’ve got ’em figured out…

  • These lyrics contribute to the idea that women are very emotional, and their feelings and thoughts change a lot. It also reinforces the idea that men try to understand women but they change their minds very quickly.

I lose my phone… / I like dogs / I ain’t perfect / I’m a perfector

  • These lyrics state the stereotypical women misplace things a lot like their phones. And that they like cute animals and dogs. And in some cases want to be perfect, they have a preconceived notion that they have to be perfect, even when that is not the case and people can make mistakes.
