Final Takeaways:

The Final is a rather interesting film in the Horror Genre. The revenge plot films rarely include a group of characters. More often than not in this genre, they focus on a woman scorned. Unfortunately, this is about all The Final has going for it when it comes to uniqueness. The characters are extremely two-dimensional, the torture methods are nothing new, and the end with mass suicide by the main characters was anticlimactic, to say the least.

The female characters of this film are often reduced to the catty and popular stereotype by portraying them as obsessed with themselves, ditzy, and focused only on their looks and sensuality. While the film does pass the Bechdel Test, it is unfortunately only a success when three girls are discussing their sex appeal and having hot sex later in the film all without mentioning a man surprisingly.

Additionally, while deaths and ambiguous endings are rather violent across the board, the methods of torture are catered to the sexes of the characters. Physical torture that would leave characters incapable of manual labor and physical activity was entirely left for male characters while methods that destroyed looks without any other damage were saved for female characters. Also, of the final two left alive, the only one left with permanent disfiguration was a female character. This analysis with the Sex Role perspective and the Bechdel Test, while The Final is interesting, is proof of the film’s lackluster content.
