Bad Stereotypes

  • Male Lead
    • The way he looks
    • Didn’t choose female lead
  • Driving
    • Female driving stereotype
    • Nice car
  • Female voice is metal on car
    • Never see a Female character

Breaking Stereotypes

  • Male Singing

Male Lead

In this commercial the opening scene is a man sitting in a car who starts to sing because he has saved a lot of money by using allstate. This is not just any male character he is well dressed, built (not weak looking, looks strong and muscular), low deep voice which are all the stereotypical characteristics of what a successful male should look like. When they choose who would act in this commercial it is a man who they thought would be best there is no female actor in this commercial at all.

Driving

In this commercial the man is excited because he has saved lots of money while driving with allstate. It is concerning that they choose a male and not a female because females are known to be bad drivers and are thought to get into more accidents then men do meaning they wouldn’t be saving as much on insurance. I feel that not using a female in this commercial is showing this stereotype or at least the creators had it in the back of their minds which is why a male lead may have been selected. The male is also driving a fancy sports car which is stereotypical of men of power that they drive these fancy nice sports cars.

Female

The only female in this commercial is the voice we hear from the metal piece on the front of his car. This plays into so many bad stereotypes and gender problems. One of these is that there is no actual female actor only her voice why couldn’t we have included and actual actor with him, why does this metal part have to be a female voice. The metal on the car is even shaped with the long hair flowing back and the typical female desired body shape.

Male Singing

The only time I see this commercial in a positive light is when the male lead starts singing. It is not custom to see males singing in cars that is more of a female thing. If males do sing it is more to rap not to songs like this. He sings so proudly and I would say that this is breaking some gender stereotypes.
