This episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender passes the Bechdel Test and it is amazing to see that it is passing the test since most movies and shows have a hard time doing that.

Are there women in the episode:

  • Toph
  • Katara
  • Ty Lee
  • Mai
  • Azula

Do the women talk to each other:

  • Toph and Katara talk to each other
  • Ty Lee and Mai talk to each other
  • Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai all talk to each other

Do they talk about something other than men:

  • Toph and Katara talk about setting up camp and how they handle it since they are a team and everyone should pitch in to help everyone. Plus they are arguing with each other since they both come from different areas of life and they is causing a divide
  • Mai and Ty Lee talk about catching some of the members of Team Avatar and how it wasn’t exciting at all before they got thrown into the river by Appa
  • Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai talk about strategy and splitting off to capture the members of Team Avatar

Once again, we pass the Bechdel Test with multiple named women who talk to each other about something besides men. Toph and Katara argue with each other about setting up camp and since they are from different styles of life, they are butting heads. Toph was raised in royalty and since she is blind, she always had someone to help her even when she didn’t want it. So now that she is away from her family, she is trying to prove that she can pull her own weight to others. Katara on the other hand is from the South Pole where everyone who lived there worked together to help provide for the entire village. This meant that they divided up the tasks to make sure that everyone was doing something and that every chore was getting done. While Mai, Ty Lee, and Azula are chasing Team Avatar, they have a conversation about strategy and which way they went. Azula told Mai and Ty Lee to go after the other members of Team Avatar while Azula went by herself to go after the Avatar. Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee also all demonstrate Instrumental Traits which is different than the norm that we all expect, but Azula portrays them the most out of the three and Mai and Ty Lee always default to her and consider her the boss. But when Mai and Ty Lee are together, they both are leaders and follow the other’s lead when the time is right and they have better expertise about a situation.
