I am analyzing the most viewed Bollywood music videos on YouTube using the Sex Role Perspective. While analyzing with the Sex Role Perspective, I will utilize the items for evaluating masculinity and femininity as presented by Hyde (1995, p. 134), and these specific items will be italicized. In this post, I will be discussing the music video for “Kamariya” from the Bollywood film Mitron.

    • All of the drummers in the music video are men, showing male characters in more forceful or aggressive types of roles.
    • The main male character is portrayed as being dominant and having a strong personality, as he is the center of many scenes, with others carrying him on a platform or dancing around him.
  • Resisting stereotypes
    • In general, the main male character is very cheerful and almost childlike with his excited, energetic demeanor.
    • The main male character is affectionate towards the main female character, doing things like giving her flowers and constantly smiling at her.

    • The main female character is quite cheerful in general.
    • Many of the female characters in the music video wear saris that are warm colors like pink.
    • The main female character scoffs at the main male character’s dancing and his attempted flattery a few times, showing that she is not susceptible to flattery.
  • Resisting stereotypes
    • The main female character appears to have a strong personality, as she makes eye contact and walks with confidence.
    • The main female character ignores the male character and walks away a few times, which portrays her as somewhat independent and self-reliant.
