The fourth female artist I will be looking at is Dua Lipa. She is known for her Pop music. Her number one song on Spotify is Levitating featuring DaBaby.
Stereotypes
In this music video, Dua Lipa is seen dancing by herself or with other women in a circular shaped elevator. She is dancing in a provocative manner as the elevator travels to different floors. For DaBaby’s rap verses, Dua Lipa is seen dancing in a smaller way in the background of DaBaby. The focus is put onto the male while the female is blurred in the background. Later on in the video, Dua Lipa is dancing around DaBaby while he just stands and watches her. This goes along with the gender stereotype that women are entertainment for men.
Counter Stereotypes
While this specific song version and music video don’t show any counter gender stereotypes, Dua Lipa has released a version of this song that does not feature DaBaby. This is due to DaBaby making comments against the LGBTQ community. Dua Lipa is an ally to the LGBTQ community and wanted to put a stop to the gender stereotypes that DaBaby made remarks about.
