The eleventh song on my list is “If I Could Fly” off of the Made in the A.M. album. This song is about vulnerability in a relationship. The main character here is expressing their emotions and is letting their guard down to their partner
Evaluating Masculinity
As stated, this song is very vulnerable and emotionally heavy. Take a look at this lyric:
“Pay attention, I hope that you listen
‘Cause I let my guard down
Right now I’m completely defenseless”
I would say this lyric, and this song as a whole, completely goes against what has been expected of men in relationships. Men are taught to not be so vulnerable in their relationships and are instead told to be the protectors of their partners. While this idea that men aren’t allowed to be emotional has become somewhat outdated as of the last couple of years, it still exists thanks to the Internet and social media. Often times I’ll see videos on Instagram or Tik Tok that encourage this idea that men shouldn’t be emotionally vulnerable with women because it’s not “manly.” However, looking at the comments of those videos, most people seem to disagree.
Evaluating Femininity
There isn’t that much to say here since this song doesn’t really take on the perspective of the woman or describe her in any way.
