Title: It was never my intention to brag: Paramore– Misery Business

Artist: Paramore

Song: Misery Business Lyrics Here

Overview:

This analysis explores female-fronted punk/alternative rock bands and how their top song expresses emotions. I will be using The Sex-Role Perspective to examine what it means to be a woman according to women in a male-dominated genre. To best explore the Sex-Role Perspective, my analysis will highlight emotions that fall under stereotypically female and counter-stereotypical emotions pulled from Hyde (1995, p. 134).

Stereotypical emotions conveyed:

  • Femininity

Contersterotypical emotions conveyed:

  • Assertive
  • Willing to take a stand
  • Dominant
  • Aggressive
  • Competitive

Conclusion:

This song has incredibly masculine traits, from derogatory language towards another woman to flaunt a man’s prize. Hayley Williams conveys the aggressive and assertive nature of the frustration of not being with someone she has feelings for. The ignition of intense passion and anger also contributes to the masculinity of this piece.
