For this entry I am analyzing the “Not Warriors/Crybaby” music video by Waterparks. This video features the band members: Awsten Knight, Geoff Wigington, and Otto Wood.
Masculine Stereotypes: At the beginning of the music video Otto and Geoff are playing video games when Awsten walks into the house. while video games are not an inherently gendered activity they are stereotypically associated with men. Throughout the entire music video the lighting is dark featuring dark blues and greys. Awsten has to rip streamers or cords off of himself at several times throughout the video. Throughout the video when Awsten is singing he appears to be yelling. This could be to try to get people to hear him. Towards the end of the video when the boys are driving in the car Awsten is sitting out the window. Again that is not a gendered activity, but it does show and uninterest in his own safety that typically wouldn’t be seen from a woman. Once they get to their destination a baseball bat is thrown across the car and they spend the remainder of the video destroying the car: smashing the windows and windshield and setting the car on fire.
Female stereotypes: When Awsten is singing or really throughout the entire video he spends very little time looking at the camera. He appears to be emotional during the entire video. The only time dark colors are not present is when there is a room of bright colored flowers. When Awsten is laying on the bed there is bodiless hands touching his body. He is not able to get himself out of the room when he tries and is left trying to bang his hands against the door. He is also shown critically inspecting his appearance in the mirror during one point of the video. While this is not necessarily a gendered behavior typically women tend to be more critical of their appearance.
Gaze theory: This video lacks all aspects of gaze theory. There is no objectification or sexualization present in this video.
