Feminine:

  • Mel is showing motherly traits when she tells Jack she wants to have a baby. She explains that seeing others with babies makes her heart ache because of the baby girl she lost.
  • Jack is showing tenderness through the way he listens and responds to Mel when she is telling him that she wants to have a baby.
  • Mel is showing typical feminine traits and adhering to the stereotype that women should do a lot of home work. This is shown when she makes coffee, basically for Doc, since he expects her to do so.

Masculine:

  • Preacher is not showing the typical masculine role here because he is acting in a very good fatherly way. He is rehearsing lines with the Christoper, the boy he is watching and taking care of.
  • Preacher shows typical masculinity when he tells Christopher that he should stand up for himself when he is getting hurt by another boy.
  • Doc is very closed off when it comes to talking about his feelings and emotions. This is shown when Mel comments on him caring for Hope so much. He quickly says a statement that suggests a change of topic.
  • Doc is going along with masculine traits when he does not want to show his weaknesses. He is sick and knows that he will not be able to work for much longer, so he has started to interview physicians to take his place. However, he does not tell Mel the real reason as to why he is interviewing people. He just makes it seem like it is time to get extra help.
