Season 1, Episode 11, BoJack Horseman: “Downer Ending”
Bechdel Test: Pass or Fail?
- Are there at least TWO women?
- Diane
- Princess Carolyn
- Sarah Lynn
- Harper
- Do they talk to each other?
- Nope
- Do they talk about something other than a man?
- Nope
Why did it Pass/Fail?
- No women talked to each other in this episode at all.
- This episode was RIDICULOUS. BoJack, Sarah Lynn, and Todd all take an insane amount of drugs and try and write 200 pages of BoJack’s book after BoJack turned away Diane from writing the book. Half the episode was BoJack’s psychedelic hallucinations; when I tell you the hallucinations were random, they were RANDOM. They touched on just about everything but focused on the life that BoJack turned away with Charlotte.
Other themes noticed:
- BoJack won’t admit that he has problems; is there a possible correlation between pride and gender? It seems like men tend to have more pride than women (at least that’s the way I think it is depicted to me in media).
- BoJack also mentioned that men shouldn’t cry– he immediately showered so “he couldn’t tell if he was crying or not.”
