I find this commercial to be ironic considering I am watching Seinfeld right now this advertisement for the 2012 Acura NSX does Jerry Seinfeld as number two in the running to buy this car. He tries using persuasive tactics to get the car from the number one person in the running for the car. He offers to do the uncomfortable duties of social events giving out characters from his award-winning show and even other ways of transportation that he supposedly uses such as is hang gliding set up over all of New York City. Finally, once he offers all these things, the number one guy agrees to giving up the car. That is until another man in a jet pack gliding suit offers this quick way of transportation to the man. The number one man hands off the keys to the man with the jet pack and flies away as Jerry Seinfeld turns around and says his name in defeat and rage quoting his show. It’s a funny commercial I very much enjoyed the comedic ties towards Seinfeld the TV show and the advertisement. There were very few women presented in this advertisement the only one being the number one man’s wife for a few seconds. This advertisement does throw the message that this car is directed towards men seeing that all three of these men want this car and are willing to give up so much for it. Surprisingly though there weren’t any descriptive words towards the car or any of the items that were supposed to be trade it off that correlate to the more instrumental vocabulary (strong, big, hansom, ect) the only notion of gender roles was the fact that the only people interested in the car we’re men and maybe the fact that they all love gadgets and show a lot of wealth with their careers and things they can afford. So in conclusion I guess there are some indications of gender roles towards the male gender that are not necessarily verbally being pushed but are visually being pushed.
