The eighteenth female artist I will be looking at is Selena Gomez. She is known for her Pop music. Her number one song on Spotify is Wolves. This song was made in collaboration with Marshmallow.
There are three thoughts of what this song and it’s music video represent. It is thought to be about Selena Gomez’s chronic illness battle, her ex boyfriend Justin Bieber, or her current boyfriend (at the time) the Weekend.
Stereotypes
The first gender stereotype seen throughout this music video, is the objectification of Selena. The camera zooms in on her body multiple times as she looks away from the camera and is sprayed with water. The camera focuses on parts of her body such as her chest, legs, and hips.
The second stereotype is pulled from the security camera seen in the background of multiple scenes. This goes to symbolize how the media is constantly watching Selena and her body, even when she wished to have privacy in personal parts of her life. Females are constantly being criticized for the way their bodies look and the way the media thinks their bodies should look like instead. These beauty standards are inescapable when you are a female artist in the public eye.
