The tenth female artist I will be looking at is Shakira. She is known for her Urban Contemporary and Merengue music. Her number one song on Spotify is Hips Don’t Lie featuring Wyclef Jean.
Stereotypes
Shakira is well known for her dancing skills, so this music video was no exception in showing off her exceptional dance movement capabilities. The camera constantly focuses in on her body, especially her stomach and hips. She can even be seen facing away from the camera with only glitter on her back and moving her body for the entertainment of the viewers.
This goes along with the gender stereotype that women are for the viewing and pleasure of others. Even Wyclef Jean can be seen watching Shakira move her hips and dance as he stands to the side. Shakira dances sexually while wearing a revealing top and a low rise skirt and she repeatedly looks away from the camera or hides her face, allowing the viewers to look at her body.
While she does try to show off people wearing costumes for Columbia’s Barranquilla’s Carnival, which is where the music video takes place, Shakira is still always the center of attention. Even the background people can be seen staring at her while she continuously dances.
