“Loved You First” is about a guy (presumably in high school) who has a big crush on a girl, and unfortunately, that girl likes someone else. The guy realizes that he’s too late to tell her how he feels and now he regrets waiting to do so.
Though this kind of thing normally happens to anyone in life, I think this song speaks to a lot of males who feel this way. Typically, as society has shown us in the past, men are the ones who “make the first move” and ask out the girl first. I think a lot of females forget the fact that guys are human too – they get nervous, they don’t know what to do, and don’t know how to act. Males and females alike tend to face a lot of miscommunication within relationships and it happens all the time. The stereotype, “Men don’t know how to communicate,” totally fits this narrative, but I think it definitely goes both ways (females are guilty of this too).
On the other hand, “Loved You First,” although a sad song about heartbreak and devastation, could relate to Sex Role Theory. The guy in the song says,
“Had my chances
Could’ve been where he is standing
That’s what hurts the most
Girl, I came so close
But now you’ll never know
Baby, I loved you first (I loved you first, loved you first)”
and again, it sort of sounds like a competition between two guys. The idea that, “I had her first” supports the competitive, aggressive male role (stated by the theory) and maybe even the fact that he was too busy in his own selfish ways to realize that she could be into a different guy and not him.
