“Heart Attack,” a fan favorite of this album, is a clever, upbeat song about heartbreak and jealousy. The boy is crushed because the girl he likes told him she wanted to be friends, and is with another guy. It isn’t ordinary in today’s music to be upbeat and discuss heartbreak, so I think that’s why so many fans really like this one, plus, I think we can all agree that we relate to it to some degree. The lines,
“Everyone’s telling me
I’m just too blind to see
How you messed me up, I’m better off now, yeah
I’m just too blind to see
How you messed me up, I’m better off now, yeah
I’m tryna be okay
I’m tryna be alright
But seeing you with him
Just don’t feel right”
I’m tryna be alright
But seeing you with him
Just don’t feel right”
describe the feelings that one has when they are let down by someone they really like. It is typical for friends to tell you, “Oh that guy wasn’t worth it,” or, “Man, you can do better, get over it,” but either way, words are easier said than done. Additionally, it is definitely typical for someone to place their crush on a pedestal, especially when they can’t have them for themselves. People always seem more attractive when they are with someone else it seems. In a way, this poor guy in the song seems lovesick and torn, and seems to be unintentionally turning this girl into an object. The lines,
“You… (oww!)
You’re all I ever wanted (oww!)
Yeah…
Yeah, every time you look like that (oww!)”
You’re all I ever wanted (oww!)
Yeah…
Yeah, every time you look like that (oww!)”
seems to me that because she let him down, his attraction toward her is now mixed with jealousy of this other guy that she’s with, making him focus more on her looks and outward appearance. In addition, this song is in rare form if you think about it. Typically, a lot of heartbreak songs that are popular on the radio star a female singer, whereas in this case, these are men singing about heartbreak. It is becoming more popular, but this highlights the idea that yes, men can be vulnerable too and do not always fit the ultimate “masculine” narrative, but can also show raw feelings of warmth and compassion too, aligning with the typical female characteristics. Though the song doesn’t really state this, I think the main character guy wants to get even with the new guy she’s with, which IS a typical male characteristic (to be competitive and aggressive by nature).
