The 13th song I will be analyzing is “Spaces” off of the album Four. This song describes a relationship that is wearing down and is about to end. The song questions who will end the relationship first. This song became one of the most powerful/popular among dedicated fans in the wake of former member Zayn Malik leaving the group shortly after the album Four was released. He was the first member to leave the group.
Evaluating Masculinity
While this song doesn’t necessarily acknowledge any gender, since this song is sung by men, I’ll say that this song really subverts the stereotype that men aren’t allowed to be emotional. Here, we can see them questioning whats going to happen in the relationship:
“Who’s gonna be the first one to start the fight?
Who’s gonna be the first one to fall asleep at night?
Who’s gonna be the last one to drive away?
Who’s gonna be the last one to forget this place?”
It’s doubtful, worried, and confused overall. Again, this is one of those songs that shows how One Direction has matured in their song writing through the years.
Evaluating Femininity
There really isn’t any mention of gender in this song, so femininity can’t really be evaluated here.
