The sixth song I will be analyzing is “Stand Up” off of the Up All Night album. This love song describes a boy who is willing to do anything and everything to be with the girl he loves.

Evaluating Masculinity

The guy in this song is extremely aggressive with describing his love for this girl. Take a look at the first lyric in the song:

“From the moment I met you, everything changed
I knew I had to get you, whatever the pain
I had to take you and make you mine”

If any guy said this to me I would be terrified. It’s very forceful and doesn’t take in the perspective of the woman in this situation.

“So put your hands up
Cause it’s a stand up
And I won’t be leaving ’til I finish stealing every piece of your heart
Every piece of your heart”

“And I will steal us a car
And we will drive to the stars
I will give you the moon
It’s the least I can do if you give me the chance”

I would say this is any example of “willing to take risks” found in the Sex Role Perspective. “Stealing every piece of your heart” and “I will steal us a car” are both examples of theft. Theft is a pretty risky thing to do. So risky that it is against the law. Regardless of if One Direction plan on stealing someones heart or a car, these lyrics represent the lengths the guy is willing to go to get with the girl.

Evaluating Femininity

This is another example of a song that allows the listener to insert themselves into the narrative. This means we don’t get a description of the girl and her feelings.
