The 12th song I will be looking at is “Steal My Girl” off of the album Four. In this song, this guy has basically found his soulmate and wants to make sure that no one else has her.

Evaluating Masculinity

“Couple billion in the whole wide world
Find another one ’cause she belongs to me”

In this lyric, we can see some assertiveness coming from the guy. He’s telling all the other guys to back off. It’s almost competitive in a way. He’s saying something like “You guys go pick someone else but I have the best girl.”

“I don’t exist
If I don’t have her”

I wanted to point this lyric out because while we saw some dominance expressed before, this lyric isn’t very characteristic of someone who is independent. I just think the contrast between the assertiveness and the dependence is interesting.

Evaluating Femininity

According to the guy here, this girl is practically perfect. She’s got the same goals as him, her parents like him, and is hot. I mean she has to be great because everyone wants her right? As far as actually getting to know what makes this girl so perfect, we don’t really get too much. Yeah she has the same dreams as the guy here, but we don’t know what those are. The whole message of the song is to basically protect her from everyone else which is also interesting. As opposed to being a love song about everything this guy loves about this girl, it’s about just having this girl and not letting anyone else near her.
