The next Justin Bieber song I will be analyzing is Be Alright from his Believe album which was released in 2012. This song shows many examples of masculine and feminine stereotypical traits. The theory I will be using to analyze this song is the sex-role perspective theory.

Masculine Stereotypical Traits

  • dominant
  • forceful
  • acts as a leader

“Need to see your face, I need to look in your eyes
Through the storm and through the clouds
Bumps on the road and upside down now
I know it’s hard, babe, to sleep at night
Don’t you worry
’cause everything’s gonna be alright, ai-ai-ai-aight
Be alright, ai-ai-ai-aight
Through the sorrow, and the fights,
Don’t you worry
’cause everything’s gonna be alright, ai-ai-ai-aight
Be alright, ai-ai-ai-aight”

The lyrics stated above show that Bieber is being forceful and dominant by saying he needs to see her face and look into the girl’s eyes. These lyrics also show that Bieber is acting as a leader by saying that everything is going to be alright, even if he does not know this may happen. He is acting as a leader and dominant over the girl trying to make her feel better about their relationship.

Feminine Stereotypical Traits

  • sensitive to other’s needs
  • tender

The lyrics that were provided also show feminine traits. the lyrics state that the woman in the relationship is worried about the relationship that is being described, so the woman is being sensitive towards her own needs and Biber’s needs because she wants everything to be fixed. The lyrics also state that the woman is tender about the idea of their relationship. They may be having fights and be in sorrow, but she needs to be reconciled by the man since she is shown as tender.
