The next Justin Bieber song that I will be analyzing is “Beauty and a Beat” which was released in 2012. The song is sung by Justin Bieber and featured with Nicki Minaj. This song is in regards to Justin’s then-girlfriend Selena Gomez whose name is specifically said in the song by Nicki Minaj. The theory that will be used to analyze “Beauty and a Beat” is the Sex role perspective theory.

The first example of sex roles in the song is located in the first verse. Justin Bieber’s lyrics state, “Show you off, tonight I wanna show you off (aye-aye-aye) What you got, a billion could’ve never bought (aye-aye-aye)” These lyrics clearly state that the woman that is being spoken of is treated as an object. Her body is something that should be shown off and the body should be shown off by the “man who owns the body.”

The second example of sex roles in the song “Beauty and a Beat’ is located in the second verse. The lyrics state, “Body rock Girl, I can feel your body rock (aye-aye-aye) Take a bow You on the hottest ticket now (aye-aye-aye).” These lyrics show that the women are only about sex and having sex with a man. One stereotypical feminine trait that could be used to describes the lyrics are the trait of being tender. Bieber is stating that he specifically can feel the woman’s body meaning she is being tender and gentle with her body while with him.

The third and final example of sex roles in the song can be found in the refrain. Justin Bieber’s lyrics state, “‘Cause all I need Is a beauty and a beat
Who can make my life complete It’s all ’bout you When the music makes you move Baby do it like you do.” Bieber is saying that all a man needs in life is to have a pretty face near him. Someone who can move their body in a way that makes others jealous. The woman is being affectionate with her body through dance which is all that a man may want in life.
