The media I will be analyzing is Justin Bieber and his lyrics, more specifically, the song “Intentions”.  This song was released in the year 2020 in reference to his current wife, Hailey Bieber. The theory I will be using for my analysis is the sex-role perspective which is defined as the role of females in a males perspective.

The first example of sex roles within the lyrics of “Intentions” is the line “Stay in the kitchen cookin’ up, got your own bread” Justin Bieber is implying that women should be in the kitchen cooking. Bieber is stating the stereotype of “women belong in the kitchen” while the man is off making the money for the family.

The second example of sex roles is “You got a mean touch, I can’t refuse (No, I can’t refuse it)” Bieber is sexualizing his wife’s body, implying she has a body he cannot live without. “You got a mean touch” could be implied as the woman having the feminine touch that men are supposed to see and the touch they deserve to have.

The third example of sex roles is “Already passed, you don’t need no approval” where Bieber is implying that a woman should ask for approval to possibly leave the house or if the clothes the woman may be wearing are good enough to be worn out in public.

The fourth and final example of sex roles is in relation to the looks of females. Females are supposed to be picture perfect from the male’s perspective. In the song, Bieber sings “picture-perfect, you don’t need no filter gorgeous, make ’em drop dead, you a killer”  Bieber is clearly stating that a woman is all about her looks and her body rather than personality.
