This year was one of war in Iraq, where 1.4 million men and women invaded and captured Saddam Hussein. Many people appeared overjoyed with this choice for person of the year, which was surprising due to the divide the war had created, as many saw it unnecessary.

“Whether the war is right or wrong, those in the armed forces are risking their lives, not only for the countries where they serve but also to defend all of us at home. TIME’s report was the best description I have read anywhere of what our feelings should be in response to the sacrifices of those in the services.” -BYRON NICHOLLS

“Bravo for honoring the heroes of the year! There may be differing opinions about whether the troops should be where they are, but there is no disputing that they deserve the utmost respect and admiration for being willing to serve and protect us. We must not only be grateful but also let the people in the services know how appreciative we are. Thanks for doing your part.” – SUSAN LUITJENS

On the cover, we can see three men, Marquette Whiteside, of Pine Bluff, Ark.; Sgt. Ronald Buxton, of Lake Ozark, Mo.; and Spc. Billie Grimes, of Lebanon, Ind., all members of Survey Platoon, Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion in the 1st Armored’s 3rd Field Artillery Regiment. Posing in similar ways to the group of three women we had seen in the previous year, almost in a mirroring way, as men, especially those in the military are often shown in a heroic stance . The choice to not include women in this cover as well seems odd, but could have been done to show what the public is used to, as media doesn’t tend to show women in the military, even though they consist of close to 20% of active members today.
