Stereotypical
- None: I don’t see any gender stereotypes in this commercial which is a huge deal considering most commercials contain at least one that pops out at me.
Non-Stereotypical
- Female to male ratio
- Inclusion
- Handicapped
- Adopted
- Paralympian vs. Olympian
Non-Stereotypical:
Female to male ratio: In this commercial the main narrator is female, the athlete is female, the mom is female. In class we learned that in most media there are more men then females represented. In this commercial however there is only one male and he is shown for like a split second. Everyone else in this commercial is female, which is a big deal for representation.
Inclusion: In this commercial the main swimmer is handicapped with both of her legs needing to be amputated. This is rare to see in commercials, to see a handicapped person as the star, which is super inclusive. Also we find out in this commercial she was adopted which is also inclusive considering not many sources of media show handicapped adopted athletes as the stars.
Paralympian vs Olympian: Most companies when looking for an athlete to support their products choose people like Michael Phelps or Simone Biles, we rarely see a Paralympian athlete used to endorse products. However in this commercial we do see this which is uncharacteristic in commercials.
