I am identifying the masculine and feminine stereotypes found within Walker Hayes’s music video Fancy Like. Unfortunately, I am unable to identify any feminine stereotypes due to no female representation within the music video.
Gender was stereotyped in the music video due to the way Walker Hayes dressed and acted. He wore a white shirt, vest, and jeans, as well as his cowboy boots. He interacted with different objects and that are typically seen as “manly” or masculine. Such as, basketball, fishing, a tractor, and working on the farm. Walker Hayes showed off his basketball skills and was working on the farm during the video. This is seen as a gender stereotype due to his presence throughout the music video.
The theory in which I am identifying through my research is the Gaze Theory. However, with the lack of female presence, there is nothing to note for looking at the desired aspect of the gaze theory. However through his lyrics
“She’s super fine, double-wide, slow dancin’… I gotta spoil my baby with an upgrade… Two straws, one check, girl, I got you (girl, I got you)… Squeak-squeakin’ in the truck bed all the way home.”
This leads the listener to believe that he has predetermined how his dates are going to go, fulfills the role men are stereotyped to follow. Such as paying and spoiling his girl. With that being said if Walker Hayes made a music video following the lyrics of his song Gaze Theory would take into effect due to his lyrics about dates and his objectification through his lyrics, “She’s super fine, double-wide, slow dancin.’”
