The FOX television series New Girl, specifically Season 2, Episode 10 titled Bathtub
Gender representation:
- In this episode, Schmidt’s boss makes another appearance while talking to him at his office desk. His boss is a female character that is in a leadership role which doesn’t align with the fact that most men are in executive positions. She also seems to hold counter stereotypical traits of women in the way that she talks to Schmidt since he just works there and doesn’t hold a title. She seems to be an assertive boss in addition to independent and driven giving by telling him “what can be more important than work” as he questions whether or not he wants to proceed with a project assignment.
- Furthermore, counterstereotypes of women are represented in a character named Angela. She is first seen at the bar Nick works at drinking by herself with what seems to be a motorcycle helmet leading the viewer to believe she is independent. This can be assumed considering Nick says she likes to drink during the day which means he sees her often. Overall, the episode mostly goes against stereotypes of women in the way that men are frequently seen as the aggressive gender but there are two scenes in which women are fighting one another.
- On the other hand, the episode follows gender stereotypes since Jess helps Winston with his panic attack. She is seen caring for him trying to calm him down by admitting she has claustrophobia on the rooftop because he thinks Schmidt is going to find out that they ruined his suits. Jess displays female traits that are generally attached to nurturing.
The Bechdel Test: Does not pass
