I chose to examine the FOX television series New Girl, specifically Season 2, Episode. 4 titled Neighbors
Gender representations:
- Although there weren’t as many gender representations as there normally are I noticed two that were related to women’s representation in work and occupation. For example, Schmidt and the other two male roommates are talking to Jess about her job search and during the conversation, he says, “the men in suits, the professionals would like to know what the plan is”. I think this relates to how men are represented in higher or executive roles more often than women. I would like to note that one male roommate is a bartender and he apologized to him and said he respected him, but he is not a professional ensuring what Schmidt said was not fully directed toward Jess but was said to her.
- Lastly, Winston (the second male with a suit job) works at a radio studio that airs on Channel 84.7 FM. When he walks into a conference room that is in use with 6 men and 1 woman. This can be related to the previous point of women and occupations.
The Bechdel Test: Does pass
- There are women in the episode that have names
- They do talk to each other
- They do talk to each other about things other than men
