The third song I will be looking at is “Truly Madly Deeply” off of the Take Me Home album. In contrast to the previous two songs (Midnight Memories and Live While We’re Young), this is a sweet love song about the boy who finally got the girl.
Evaluating Masculinity
I would go so far as to say that the way love is conveyed in this song goes against some of the stereotypical masculine traits identified in the Sex Role Perspective. While the previous two songs were somewhat aggressive and dominant in nature, “Truly Madly Deeply” is more soft-spoken and affectionate (which are stereotypically female traits). Take a look at this lyric:
“Cause here’s the tragic truth if you don’t feel the same
My heart would fall apart of someone said your name”
This lyric in particular shows how fragile this boys heart is and shows how much love he has for this girl.
“And tender touches, just to show you how I feel
Or should I act so cool like it was no big deal?”
This lyric not only supports the idea that this song goes against the stereotypical masculine traits, it also directly calls out what society expects of boys when they experience these strong emotions: just “act so cool.”
Evaluating Femininity
There honestly isn’t that much to say here. We don’t really get the girls perspective in this situation or get any real description of the girl.
