The FOX television series New Girl, specifically Season 2, Episode 7 titled Menzies
Gender representation:
- In this episode of New Girl, Schmidt walks into the break room at his work and sees his boss named Emma Sharpe who is the Divisional vice president of all North America. The main view of women’s representation in this episode displays the female gender in career paths and occupations. Emma is in an executive role which goes against what is typically seen in the real world. She walks around and talks in a stern and assertive voice which is what follows the norm of masculine traits, and she seems to hold power over Schmidt seeing that he just works at the place and doesn’t hold a higher title.
- In addition, Jess is looking for a new job and decides to follow through with an interview to teach adults in a writing course. When in the waiting room, there are 5 women and 2 men also waiting to be interviewed. This can be interpreted as alluding to the fact that there are more women than men that go into the teaching field. On the other hand, the office that Jess is called into reads “Administration Office”, which again goes against the observation that men occupy these executive role positions.
The Bechdel Test: Does not pass
