“Rock Me” is probably the spiciest song One Direction has ever written and released and as an eleven-year-old, naturally, I thought nothing of it. If you take a look at the lyrics, it seems like the boys are just singing about hanging out with a girl at the beach while playing the guitar. Well, the term “rock” in this context may not mean playing a rock song on an instrument. The lyrics,
“The words you whispered I will always believe
I want you to rock me, mmm, rock me, mmm, rock me, yeah”
make it quite evident to the listener that the girl in the song whispers a different four-letter word to the guy, and that “rock” is just a placeholder for that certain word. Interestingly enough, the girl in this instance is taking the lead and being flirtatious which contradicts what we learned the typical role is for a girl in a relationship; playing a subordinate role.
The Sex Role Theory does not really support this song because of the reversed roles. Although, the hegemonic masculinity or “most honored way of being a man” can be supported here because society often tends to praise males when they “get laid” and “if they can get with a bunch of girls.” I wish society wouldn’t think this way, but that’s just the way it is.
