The FOX television series New Girl, specifically Season 3, Episode 10 titled Thanksgiving III
Gender representation:
- To start the episode Coach receives his invitation for that year’s Thanksgiving party. He walks out of his room showing Nick the electronic invitations that were supposed to be looked at as ‘cute’ or heartwarming’ since it had animals and was animated. Coach says, “when your testicles fell off, did you form lady parts?” I think he says this because it is represented as women like to do things that are more on the creative side or planning events and he could not see a man doing this sort of activity. I also think Coach is saying that Jess is taking over the relationship and making him do things that he wouldn’t normally do. I think this relates to men being seen as the more dominant position in the relationship and women taking on a smaller role. But, when it is seen that men are participating in these things then they are perceived as not having as much power.
- The roommates plan a trip to go camping and the rest of the episode makes it seem like women cannot camp or don’t like camping. First, Schmidt and Coach along with Nick have a 3-way high-five screaming, “men, killing, hunting” this implies that women are not associated with this sort of activity. This is represented this way since Nick says that men are hunters and women are foragers.
- Also, when first going out to hunt for food Nick says to the rest of the guys “this is perfect, a primal man in nature. Stalking prey. Who’s basically the lady now, Coach?” This scene goes along with the topic of the men hunting and women foraging as Nick says before.
The Bechdel Test:
- There are women that are named
- They do talk to each other
- No, they don’t talk to each other about anything other than men
