This song by Chris Stapleton is a very deep song about heartbreak. Throughout the lyrics, there are many examples of how heartbroken the male artist is that the girl left him. Based on how the lyrics are written, there are both masculine and feminine stereotypes.

Masculine Stereotypes

  • When looking at the lyrics it was hard to find any specific lines that would be a masculine stereotype. Despite this, I thought the whole message of the song could be seen as a male stereotype. The artist says he didn’t see this breakup coming which can lead to the feeling of not knowing how to act and a feeling of emptiness which stereotypically leads to males not knowing how to react.

Feminine Stereotypes

  • “Girl, the way you broke my heart, It shattered like a rock through a window”
    • Within country music, girls are oftentimes portrayed as heartbreakers. Songs that portray the girl leaving often exemplify how the female left the male completely broken-hearted.
  • “Oh, why you got to be so cold?, Why you got to go and cut me like a knife And put our love on ice?”
    • Some country stereotypes can lead the female in songs to be heartless, or in this song, cold. This thought comes from breakup songs where the girl left the male artist such as this song by Chris Stapleton.

Despite a few specific stereotypes, this song is a little unusual within country music. It can be seen a little different because it is a male artist singing about heartbreak and how he is feeling after a girl left him. In country music, it is unusual to see this type of masculine emotion portrayed.
