Artist Walker Hayes wrote “U Gurl” with quite a bit of both masculine and feminine stereotypes. Throughout the song, he describes what he is feeling essentially based on how the female looks or what she is wearing.

Feminine Stereotypes

  • “And I kinda like that you ain’t afraid, To get mud on your boots”
    • These lyrics can actually be seen as going against most feminine stereotypes. Usually, the common stereotype of females is that they don’t want to get dirty or do anything that might cause them to get messy. This lyric implies that that is a stereotype but this girl is not like that.

Masculine Stereotypes

  • “Every shade of blue jeans look mean with a body like that, Woo woo girl”
  • “Girl I hate to see you go, But I love to watch you exit”
  • “I know it’s rude to stare, but shoot, I don’t wanna stop looking at, You girl”
    • These three different lyrics are seen as a masculine stereotype because of the male artist who wrote/sings it. All of the lyrics listed don’t have the same context but in the end, lead to the same meaning. Males are oftentimes known for looking and talking about a female just based on her body or what she might look like. Each lyric is talking about some aspect of the physical female body and the male watching/looking which is why it is seen as a masculine stereotype.
  • “Guys like me like girls that look like you girl”
    • This is a straightforward stereotype written within the lyrics. The “guys” are the men that just essentially like a woman for her body or what she can do, which refers to the part that says “looks like you girl”.

I was surprisingly shocked how much this song revolves around one basic thing; a male looking at a woman. Due to this repeated theme in the song, there are a lot of prominent masculine stereotypes.
