Carolesdaughter (born Thea Taylor) is a punk-rock singer and songwriter whos alternative music is on the rise in the alternative rock scene. Her single “please put me in a medically induced coma” focuses mainly on the mental turmoil she experiences in her life, a few of the lines from the song stand out as an insight into her gender identity, but overall the song as a whole exploits the types of aggressive emotions that aren’t expected or seen from females according to the Sex Role Theory.
“Please put me in a medically induced coma, don’t make me live awake, I’m tired and I don’t wanna, sad and sour twenty-four f***ing hours a day
Bars and flowers on my album cover you don’t play, you make me worthless, what if I just threw you away?”
According to the Sex Role Theory, female traits are gentle, compassionate, caring, and tender- Carolesdaughter describes her feelings in a totally opposite way. She expresses her desires to give up at trying so hard in life and asks cynically if it can all be put to rest. Because of the traits commonly associated with females, hearing these lyrics describing being “sad and sour” and begging for a medically induced coma coming from a woman are surprising and shocking. The “bars and butterflies” on her albums are a representation of femininity, but she feels they are worthless in receiving attention.
Scrolling through Carolesdaughter’s Instagram account, her physical expression is far from typical and define her and her music in a unique way. Carolesdaughter keeps her hair very short, at times a buzzcut, but sometimes a little longer than that, and is always wearing very dark and heavy black makeup. She decks herself out in lots of hardware jewelry filling her many facial piercings, covering her neck in studs and spikes, and chunky rings. Her bold and cold look is contrasted by the amount of feminine clothing she wears. In many of her pictures, she wears dresses with long knee-high socks or fishnet tights or spaghetti-strap tank tops. Her shoes are very noticeable too, she wears tall chunky and strappy boots with heals. Overall, her look has remained a unique expression of femininity that is contrasted by harder, colder looks that in the past have typically been associated more with men-especially within the rock industry.
