The media I will be analyzing is the movie Friends with Benefits. In this post I will be outlining the stereotypical gender roles given to us by the sex role perspective portrayed in the film by the main characters: Jamie and Dylan
Jamie:
- Jamie contrasts the typical female gender roles given to us by the sex role persepective. Her character represents gender role reversal. For example:
- She uses a lot of harsh and foul language
- She’s very sarcastic
- Very work oriented
- Very closed off, not warm or welcoming to new people in her life
- Jamie isnt close with her family, though she is very loyal to her friends
- Is not gullible, she is very intelligent and smart.
- Very independent and self reliant
- Asks Dylan out first, says “I’m going to buy you a drink”
- Jamie is not shy at all, she’s very outspoken
Dylan:
- Dylan’s character follows the stereotypical masculine traits given by the sex role persepective. For example:
- He’s very independent and self sufficient
- It is hard for him to open up
- Is very noncommittal
- Analytical
- He’s very passionate about his job
- Analytical
- Has leadership qualities within his position
- Ambitious – works at GQ in NYC
- He’s very masculine
- In his dress, speech, masurisms
- Forceful
- With he and Jamie’s relationship
- He’s very independent and self sufficient
